According to the passage, what is an in-text citation?
Strand 4 · Writing
English Language Year 3 Learner Material, Section 8: Subordinate Clauses and Referencing
When you write essays, reports, assignments or research work, you often use ideas or words from other people’s work. Referencing means showing where you got those ideas. This is very important because:
1. It gives credit to the original writers.
2. It helps avoid plagiarism (using someone’s work without permission).
3. It shows that you have done research.
4. It allows your readers to find the source if they want to learn more.
One of the most common styles of referencing and citation used in schools and universities is the APA style (American Psychological Association). The current version of the APA is the 7th edition.
Citation A citation is a short note in your writing that tells the reader where the information came from. It is also called an in-text citation because it appears inside your paragraph.
1. In-text Citation Format (APA 7th Edition)
Use the author’s last name and the year of publication.
Examples
a. (Field, 2005)
b. (Aidoo, 1992)
2. Direct Quotation (When you use the exact words) Add the page number from where the words were taken.
Examples
a. (Field, 2005, p. 14)
b. (Aidoo, 1992, p. 34) Reference List After writing your work, you must list all the sources you used. This list comes at the end and is called the Reference List. The items must be arranged in alphabetical order using the first author’s surname.
1. Books Format: Author’s surname, Initials. (Year). Title of the book. Publisher.
Examples
a. Aidoo, A. A. (1992). Changes: A love story. Heinemann.
b. Smith, J. (2020). The history of science. Random House.
c. Smith, J., Johnson, K., Thompson, R., & Lee, S. (2020). The impact of climate change. Routledge.
2. Journal Article
Format: Author’s surname, Initials. (Year). Title of article. Journal Name, Volume (Issue), page numbers.
Example: Owusu, G. (2018). Youth empowerment and urban development in Ghana. Journal of African Studies, 56(2), 45–61.
3. Website Articles
Format: Author or organisation. (Year). Title of the webpage. Website Name. URL
Example: Ministry of Education. (2022). Senior high school policy reforms. https:// moe.gov.gh/shs-policy Key APA Rules
1. Use initials for authors’ first and middle names.
Example: Aidoo, A. A. (not Ama Ata Aidoo)
2. Only capitalise the first word of the book/article title and proper nouns (names of people, places, etc.).
Example: The impact of climate change (not The Impact Of Climate Change)
3. Italicise book and journal titles.
Example: Changes: A love story, Journal of African Studies.
4. Always include the full website address (URL) for online sources. Do not add hyperlinks (just plain text URLs).
Importance of Referencing
1. Helps build trust in your academic work.
2. Shows you are honest and responsible.
3. Prepares you for university research writing.
Remember that, whenever you use information from a book, website, or article, CITE IT. It shows respect to the original writer and strengthens your own work.
Activity 8.3 Identification and Explanation of Referencing Components
1. In your group, choose a literary book (printed or online). Discuss and identify the following referencing details:
a. Author’s surname and initials
b. Year of publication
c. Title of the book
d. Publishing company or institution
e. Place of publication (if available)
2. After discussing, prepare a short oral presentation explaining why each detail is important in APA referencing.
Activity 8.4 Organising and Connecting Ideas Across Multiple Sources
1. In groups, search and gather referencing details of three different literary works (print and digital). Then create a concept map that shows:
a. The different types of sources (book, journal, website)
b. The referencing details they have in common
c. Any differences in how the information is presented
2. Present your concept map to the class and explain the relationship among the items.
Activity 8.5 Application of APA Format to Real Examples
1. Find one literary article or book from your school library or online. Using the APA 7th edition style, write a full reference for it. Include all necessary parts (author, year, title, source...)
Ensure the formatting is correct (e.g., italics, punctuation, capitalisation)
2. Submit your referencing in your notebook or online document.
3. Explain how you arranged each part during a short peer review session.
